SHOP LOCAL. SHOP SUSTAINABLE.

Support your community. Support green shopping.

Our "Shop Local. Shop Sustainable." campaign aims to connect students to local Glasgow merchants and to promote shops that sell sustainably sourced goods. Did you know that according to the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change the fashion industry contributes to 10% of global CO2 emissions every year? Fashion is only one aspect of consumerism, so imagine the sum of all of your purchases including groceries, home goods, and cleaning products. Everything we use and consume comes from somewhere and has impacts on the ecosystem and economies of its origin. By making more environmentally conscious choices in our microcosm of Glasgow and learning how to be an informed buyer, we can become better global citizens. The goal of this campaign is to find shops to help you make more environmentally friendly choices and to support local businesses.

Shop Local. Shop Sustainable.: About Us

OUR SHOPS

"Sustainability has always been hugely important to me, in both my personal and business life. In my eyes, if I can’t run my business in an environmentally friendly way, then I shouldn’t be running a business.

I have tried to reduce the amount of single-use plastics used in the bakery as much as possible - for example, we don’t use any ingredients that are individually wrapped in plastic, and bulk buy as many of our ingredients in large paper bags where possible. In addition to this, all of our packaging is paper-based & recyclable where possible, or biodegradable/recyclable alternatives to plastic. The packing peanuts we use for postal orders are even made from starch and dissolve in warm water!

In addition to reducing the amount of plastic we use in the bakery, reducing the amount of food waste we create is hugely important. As a result, we have recently started selling “Wonky Boxes” - half-price boxes with baked goods that have structural/aesthetic issues, that would have otherwise been discarded (but are still absolutely delicious!)"

"Locavore is a social enterprise which exists to help build a more sustainable local food system which is better for our local economy, the environment and our communities. We’re about making the money spent on food do more for the benefit of society and our environment.
We’ve been working with this brief since 2011 to develop ideas and practical solutions which can be used to deliver a better food network. Over this time we have opened a shop, developed a market garden, established a veg box scheme and got lots of people more engaged in thinking about issues around food, where it comes from, and the fairness and sustainability of mainstream supply chains.
Everyone eats food, and the food we choose to eat has far reaching impacts which shape our landscapes, streetscapes and local economic situations. What we eat impacts our health, but also everything else in the world with issues as wide ranging as deforestation, climate change, animal welfare, public health, exploitation of the global poor and workers rights. It’s fair to say we have a lot more than food on our plates"

"From the very start, we knew we wanted three things: to use locally sourced produce, to use suppliers who put an emphasis on their sustainability, and to use completely eco-friendly packaging.

We’re delighted that the majority of our ingredients now come from sustainable, local suppliers. And this has been recognised by the stores that stock us and share similar values.

We’ve found the Glasgow community an incredible place for this ethos and have been thrilled to find so many local businesses that share this desire for making our city a more sustainable market!

We may be a small business but every little effort can make a huge difference."

"Och Vegan Cosmetics is a cooperation of two soul mates, Magdalena & Remi. We're based in Glasgow and committed to everything vegan, natural and zero-waste, which are, of course, our philosophies, too. We believe that products made by hand with passion and respect for nature create a beautiful, compassionate society, and every bar of soap is a brick in this new world. We only use moisturising, plant-derived oils, natural colourants and essential oils for scent. We also give back by planting a tree for every order!"

"So we started off on such a tight budget that all of our equipment was second hand which we still maintain and use daily. As we've grown we have invested in the newest of equipment with energy efficiencies! Our packaging is biodegradable and if you're a wholesale customer we supply bulk coffee in reusable buckets with vacuum lids to ensure an airtight seal and absolute freshness along with a sound environmental solution. We don't have all of the answers but we ask all of the questions and have adapted our processes along our journey to find the best solutions available to us to supply with minimum carbon output.

Everything we do is instinctive. We recycle, we reuse, we compost, we minimise waste, we reduce packaging, we always have!  We did all of this before Climate Change awareness hit the headlines! We will continue to find the best environmental solution in all we do, in fact, we only went and organised the world's first single use cup free coffee festival. You can read more about our practices on our guest blog for Circular Glasgow. Bring on the United Nations Climate Change Summit, Glasgow 2020! Together we can all make a difference!"

"For Urban Grocer, fruit & veg has always been in our blood.
We are a family run business whose roots in the industry began way back in 1946, when we started our journey into wholesaling fresh fruit and vegetables in Scotland.

Through generations of experience as well as many changes in our industry, we have striven to develop the products and services we offer today. In 2013 Urban Grocer was conceived as our way of supplying fresh food directly to our customers, allowing us to grow into the modern food service company we proudly run today.

Fresh produce is our passion and we take great pride in providing local fresh produce to our customers, delivering the best in season. It’s our love of food and the service we give to our customers that make us who we are today."
